Followers Are Fickle
Since followers have ulterior motives, expect them to be unpredictable. They’re like consumers searching for the best deal, which makes them highly susceptible to the advances of competitors. Whether it’s another job offer, the new worship center down the street, a rising political leader or a neighboring softball team, followers are always being courted by others, and some of them change their allegiances as easily as they change their cell phone plans. They may praise a leader on one day and demand the leader’s ouster the next day.
Followers Demand Trustworthiness
While followers may be fickle, they expect leaders to keep their promises. Failing to do so is a deal breaker. Leaders are also expected to make decisions for the betterment -- and not the detriment -- of their followers. During times of upheaval or adversity, “Leadership in a Crisis – How to Be a Leader,” an undated article from “The Wall Street Journal” website, advises leaders to make sacrifices themselves before asking others to do so. In a business, this may mean the owner takes a pay cut before making employees do so.
